Marine Company 5 History |
On May 12th, 1964, a group of men from the other four companies met and organized what became known as Marine Co. #5. At that first meeting, an election of officers was held and the following slate was purposed and elected: Captain Thomas Markley; First Lt. Robert Larsen; Second Lt. Donald Floyd; Chief Driver Bert Okst and Treasurer David Skogen. |

Today, under the leadership of Captain Brennan Holmes, Marine Co.5 is one of the largest and most active companies in the department. We have many training drills and company activities to keep our skills sharp and promote unity between the members. After 42 years of
service, 5 still maintains the present day “fire boat”, but also has had
three “class A” pumpers. Below is a short description of Marine Co. 5’s
apparatus in the order of our company use: |

The Duck (64-67): Was and amphibious "six wheel drive" vehicle. It was 9 feet wide and 31 feet long and could reach top speeds of 50 mph on land and 6 mph in water. With a pump mounted on deck, it was the department’s first Marine unit. |
The
Power Wagon (64-67): Was a four-wheel drive brush truck equipped with a
small pump and water supply. It carried shovels, brooms and Indian Cans
which is not that different from the present day Brush Truck. |
The Moose
(67-84): was our first 750 GPM “front mounted” pumper. Co.5 now had the
ability to fight structural fires (class A). With a high road clearance,
short wheelbase and four-wheel drive, it made and excellent first attack
pumper. It could take a position “off road” in a driveway or front yard,
if needed. This gave room for the hook and ladder in the front of the
building. Occasionally, it was still used for brush fires until being
retired in 1985. |

SEAGRAVE CLOSED CAB (1985-2004): A 1500
GPM pumper it was the first engine in our house to have a completely
closed in cab. Now all fire fighters could ride safely “to and from” calls
without the fear of falling from the back step. Nice in the winter too! |
SEAGRAVE CLOSED CAB (2004-present): 1500 GPM pumper with state of the art computer safety systems. We’ve got lights bright enough to light up a baseball field and a video camera on the back step to keep us safe when backing up. |
